My last table of the night was a black, middle-aged (30s or 40s?) couple. They were the only ones left in the restaurant. As I was taking their order, her husband didn’t hesitate to call her “baby” or “sweetie” in front of me. But there was a type of sincerity in his voice. He didn’t say “baby” like it was usual or common. There was something special.
